The Role of Moisturizers in the Skin Barrier

The Role of Moisturizers in the Skin Barrier

The primary function of a moisturizer is to suppress moisture loss. When the skin barrier is damaged, it is necessary first to suppress the water loss to restore the standard barrier. A moisturizer supplies moisture to dry skin that is rough and flaky, which a dry environment and external stimuli may cause. In addition, a moisturizer helps to maintain and restore skin flexibility by blocking the evaporation of moisture and induces uniform exfoliation of old dead skin cells to maintain a smooth skin surface. When the moisturizer functions appropriately in the skin, the skin retains homeostasis despite changes in the external environment so that the stratum corneum can maintain proper hydration. After applying a moisturizer to damaged skin, the skin barrier is restored through the following four-step process. The oily component of the moisturizer creates a thin film on the skin, and barrier repair begins. The skin moisture distribution coefficient changes; Moisture diffuses from the dermis to the epidermis. The synthesis of skin lipids and intercellular lipid secretion controls water distribution to the epidermis.

According to Dr. Albert Kligman, to become a cosmeceutical, all three conditions must be met:

1- Can the active ingredient penetrate the stratum corneum, and can it be provided in a sufficient concentration to the skin through a process consistent with the mechanism of action?

2- Does the active ingredient have special biochemical and pharmacological mechanisms in the cells and tissues of human skin?

3-Is there a statistically significant double-masked placebo-controlled clinical study to substantiate the efficacy claim, and has it been published in a medical journal?

Magnesium Aspartate (and) Zinc Gluconate (and) Copper Gluconate ingredients are best for repairing the barrier because they visibly improve skin texture and reduce deep wrinkles by increasing the oxygen immediately available to the skin 14% after 30min. They also stimulate energy release with +34% ATP synthesis after 6 and 24 hours.

It is active at all ages for vitality, skin aging prevention, and protection against stress and pollution.
